The Matter (formally known as the M-11:23 Matter) is an extraterrestrial substance that first appeared in the DC Universe during the events of the 1986–1987 "Secrets of the Lightning" storyline in Showcase Presents: The Fury of Firestorm, vol. 2, #4. It is a chunk of pure extradimensional matter that has been "chewed" or "gnawed" by a loose extradimensional being known as "Gaea" and was brought to Earth by the villainous organization known as Intergang.Properties of The MatterThe Matter has several unique properties. It has been described as a chunk of pure "negative matter", which means that it has an opposite charge to antimatter and will not explode when combined with it. Instead, the two substances simply cancel each other out and disappear without a trace. The Matter also has an ability called "hypermorphosis", which allows it to change its shape and size at will, as well as repair itself if it is damaged or destroyed. It also exudes a sort of gravity field that affects anything nearby, including matter and energy, drawing them towards its center. This field has the effect of causing those caught within it to feel a sense of vertigo and nausea, as well as causing objects to float towards the Matter's center. The Matter's Impact on the DC UniverseAside from its odd physical properties, The Matter has had a significant impact on the DC Universe. Its appearance in Star City caused a mass panic among its citizenry, who believed it to be an alien invasion or the end of the world. This event caused the city's police department to declare a state of emergency and evacuate all non-essential personnel from the city. The Matter's true nature and purpose was first revealed by Firestorm (Dr. Ronnie Raymond), who had been captured by Intergang and was forced to merge with Gaea. Firestorm explained that The Matter was sentient and was simply "hitchhiking" on Intergang's orders, with no malevolent purpose. The Matter later teleported away from Star City, seemingly without any direction or destination. The Matter reappears years later in Blüdhaven as part of the "Crisis of Infinite Earths" crossover event. It was revealed that Intergang had been manipulating events in Blüdhaven for months in order to draw out the city's heroes so they could be easily destroyed. However, when the city's remaining heroes (including Firestorm) united and attacked Intergang's base, The Matter protected them by causing Intergang's base to implode, killing all inside. The Matter's Role in the New 52In September 2011, The New 52 rebooted DC's continuity. In this new timeline, The Matter is still present and plays a key role in several events that transpire during writer Greg Pak's run on the Firestorm series. Pak fleshes out Gaea's history more, revealing that she is not some extradimensional being but instead an artificial intelligence construct created by a civilization of talking gorillas who live on a planet outside our galaxy. This civilization had been destroyed long ago by their own creation—a sentient extradimensional Matter—which they had unleashed on their own planet as a doomsday device. The Matter—now calling itself "the Sentry"—is eventually freed from its prison by the gorillas' descendants, who seek to exact revenge on humanity for their ancestors' actions. However, when The Sentry attempts to destroy humanity as well as Gaea (who had also been seeking vengeance), Firestorm merges with Gaea in order to subdue and contain The Sentry within her own body. As a result of this merge, Gaea is destroyed and The Sentry is remanded into an extradimensional prison once again. Firestorm herself is transformed into a new being—an amalgamation of herself and Gaea—with newfound psionic powers that allow her to communicate telepathically with others and even bring inanimate objects to life.
